11 Reasons Why You Should Date a Scottish Person

Culture Trip stands with Black Lives Matter. Aye, the Scottish accent is pretty much universally acknowledged to be one of the dreamiest brogues out there. Expect long weekends hiking in the Cairngorms and road-tripping along the Isle of Skye, tackling a few munros together or even the West Highland Way. All of which is extremely romantic, yes, but be prepared to invest in a good waterproof jacket too.

Scotland’s childminders closed their settings at the start of the pandemic unless they were caring for the children of key workers and vulnerable.

Earthtime’s Forest School nurseries at Duffus and Elgin — which operate wholly outdoors — will reopen within the next fortnight. This follows new guidance issued last week from the Scottish Government on the reopening of outdoor nurseries and a successful appeal for nursery volunteers. These will offer some sessions to all registered families, as well as a dedicated group for children transitioning to primary one from Duffus nursery.

Throughout the pandemic the Duffus nursery has been running a separate childcare hub for children of key workers and vulnerable families, which is set to continue. The pandemic has thrown into focus the benefits of the outdoor learning and play model practised at Earthtime as Scotland looks at ways forward for post-lockdown schooling. Earthtime opened its Cooper Park off-shoot in January this year with funding and support from Thrive Outdoors, with the specific aim to cater for more vulnerable families, offering a central location, waterproof clothing, footwear and daily snacks without charge.

The key workers’ childcare hub at Duffus has been working with an average of 12 children daily, who nursery staff say have settled in well to learning in the woodland. The nursery’s practitioners have also kept up contact with registered families during lockdown with daily bedtime stories and activities through social media. Natalie Campbell, Earthtime project leader, said: “The reopening of both our nurseries has only been possible due to the incredible response we have received from a recent appeal for volunteers.

We were overwhelmed by the number of people coming forward to donate their time and are very grateful. This should also, over the summer, give staff a chance for a bit of a break as they have been working very long and hard, often beyond their hours, in recent months.

The earliest surviving reference to curling dates from when a challenge match which involved the throwing of stones across ice was recorded. The participants in this contest were a monk from Paisley Abbey and a relative of the abbot. Towards the end of the eighteenth century Reverend John Shephard, Minister of Muirkirk, wrote of his parishioners:.

Their chief amusement in winter is curling, or playing stones on smooth ice. They eagerly vie with one another who shall come nearest the mark, and one part of the parish against another, one description of men against another, one trade or occupation against another, and often one whole parish against another.

Scotland will remain in phase three of its route out of lockdown until at least next month — if not longer — but gyms and swimming pools are among the venues given the welcome news they can soon reopen. A total of 52 new cases a day were recorded on average in the last week, compared to a daily average of 16, three weeks ago. The First Minister has said Scotland will remain, for now, in phase three but also indicated that this may remain the case beyond the next review point, on September Sign up for our daily Politics briefing for political exclusives, analysis and debate.

Childminders and fully outdoor nurseries are now able to welcome children back as lockdown restrictions ease. Under guidance issued by the Scottish Government this week, childminders must limit the number of households they provide childcare for to a maximum of four, in addition to children of their own household, at any one time. Childminding settings in Scotland can re-open from today, but there is no obligation to do so. Physical distancing will not be expected between children although it is advised wherever adults may interact, and the guidance states that enhanced cleaning and hygiene measures must be put in place.

Fully outdoor nurseries can reopen too but have also been advised that providing critical childcare for key workers and vulnerable children must be the first priority when allocating spaces.
